Week 10- Tattoos, Japanese Atelier's, South Korean Shoes and Outfits of the Week
As well as much more!
I’m very proud of this weeks newsletter, as it brings a range of deeply researched recommendations from all over. From small Japanese ateliers using boro techniques to emerging brands out of the Netherlands and Bristol to a small collaboration on a pair of shoes out of South Korea. I hope you enjoy this weeks newsletter, and feel free to let me know what you would like to see next!
Silllage
A great Japanese brand, they take inspiration from all over, often from 60’s US style. They take a lot of care in their fabrics, using organic cotton to make their denim as well as a focus on upcycling, meaning that many of their pieces will often be completely unique.
Their pricing ranges between £100- £400
Poten Hats
A Japanese take on American base ball hats that are made in the same factory that produces major league baseball hats. The clear Japanese influences in terms of the fabrics used paired with the form creates something super unique.
Pin Stripe Hat £48 (Top Left)
Lined Dyed Hat £47 (Top Right)
Chambray Hat £47 (Bottom Left)
Sunny Dry Hat £47 (Bottom Right)
Rifatto
Rifatto is a Japanese atelier that produces clothing with various techniques such as re-working clothes via the Japanese technique of boro. This is the process of layering scraps of fabric together using running stitches to join them together. This is one of my favourite techniques used in clothing because it makes a unique and one of one texture that looks great. It’s a meticulous process, which is often reflected in its pricing, the Kapital Boro Jacket is going for around £2000 for example. Rifatto is much more reasonably priced, ranging between £80 to £400. You would have to pay shipping + import duties to get them into the UK (if the product you’re buying is over £150) but it would still be much cheaper then alternative brands selling boro clothing.
Millo Archive x The Negative Three
One of my favourite shoes to come out recently, Millo Archive are based out of South Korea and are another great brand well worth checking out in general.
Crescendo Desert Boots £120
Outfits of the Week
1. & 2. are both outfits by Sabo, he’s got some truly creative outfits to take inspiration from. To be honest, I didn’t think we’d see long grandad socks being pulled off any time soon, but he seems to have done it! In terms of brands he wears, there’s a lot of Beams Plus, Engineered Garments, Dickies, Needles, Warehouse & Co, Post Overalls as well a great deal of vintage clothing.
3 Geoff, wears lots of smaller brands such as Foret Studios, C.C. Benoit, William Ellery and Nigel Cabourn Japan.
Kazuki wears a lot of the usual suspects such as Engineered Garments and Needles, but also makes a lot of use of vintage pieces such as the 1950's Bergian Army Denison Jacket seen below.
Saeed, the Co-Founder of Story MFG, as you may predict predominantly wears his own brand!
Alex is based in Stuttgart and wears a lot of WhiteHill Mercantile, a great brand based in Glasgow already mentioned in the newsletter. As well as a lot of Carhartt, particulaly their collaboration with Invincible- a recent collaboration well worth checking out.
Natra Studios
I’ve been following Natra and what they’ve been doing for a while now, based out of Bristol, they’ve consistently been putting out high quality hand-made clothing. Their pricing reflects the quality and the fact that everything they do is hand-made, ranging between roughly £100 for shorts, £150+ for track jackets and £200-400 for outerwear Jackets.
Camiel Fortgens
An Amsterdam-based brand focusing on unisex clothing, that has a sense of being kept purposefully unfinished. They use top quality fabrics from Europe and Japan, with production taking place in Europe. They’re a brand which i’ve seen worn more and more and it looks like they’re only going to continue grow.
Tattoos
LouisLou does some awesome pieces, his time in London looks to be limited as he has announced he will not be here for much longer! So its well worth booking in sooner rather than later if you’re interested in getting something from him.
He also does some great prints that are worth checking out.
Tone Deaf Unisex Jacket
A pretty cool newly released jacket, that has been naturally dyed using fruit and vegetables and block printed by hand over a 16 day period.
