Welcome to week 18, the grand shorts report where I cover what I think are the best options for this summer and what are some fun and unique ways to style them. I’ve written about what I think is happening with shorts and where they’re gonnah go this summer in terms of what’s going to be ‘trendy’ or not, which is certainly not a golden rule and I very much encourage breaking these rules, if done right. I’ve taken brands from all sorts of price points and places including smaller brands like Tefkit to larger brands like YMC. And included some examples of people that have got great shorts on and styled them in a unique or simply very nice manner. Enjoy the read!
Lots of the people I consider to have great style particularly out of Japan have been rocking a combination similar to that seen above with shorts that stop just below the knee that are somewhat baggy paired with long socks. Wearing shorts and styling them in this way is great for a unique statement outfit this summer that you won’t see others wearing. That being said, it takes some balls to pull off! If you’re a fan of the shorts he’s wearing they’re from Phingerin.
A theme you’ll see is i’m liking shorts that end just above the knee. Whilst there’s still space for larger shorts particularly balloon shaped of which i’m a big fan, I think we’re starting to see slightly shorter shorts become more popular. And I think just above the knee and still baggy makes for a great combination. In terms of the outfit by front river, I really like the layering here, definitely something i’ll be taking inspiration from.
Super nice colours on this one, i’m a big fan of pairing the sandals with the shorts, it’s definitely a fun way to style your shorts.
A relatively simple outfit, but for an everyday summer fit this is exactly what you want to be going for. A simple pair of pleated shorts with muted colours that work together really nicely. This outfit embodies my philosophy on clothing which is to try and build as nice an outfit as simply as you can, using as little as you can
Callum’s always got some great fits, and though I think jorts are probably on their way out, if the denim is high quality as these clearly are then I still think they’re very much a great choice. The double denim is always slightly risky but works well here, I think the different of denim works really nicely.
Really like the jacket here, but what makes the outfit, in a subtle manner is the shorts that stop just above the knee (sorry to keep on going on about it).
Affordable Option: Service Works Drill Short £65
A simple short that can be a pillar of lots of summer outfits. A pretty straight leg fit, striking the right balance between not being too baggy but also giving you some space to breath which I think is the way shorts and trousers are going at the moment.
Statement Short- Kartik Research £200-300
There aren’t enough people that go for a statement short, statement trousers can often be a lot and you’ve really got to get the balance right. But with shorts you show a bit of flare and Kartik Research though pricey have got some great pieces for that. If you are wearing a pretty out there pair of shorts then there’s no need to go crazy on top, just a simple relaxed fit white t-shirt can make for a great outfit.
Tefkit Hawkweed Shorts: £80-100
Tefkit are a brand i’ve featured on the newsletter before as they’re a slow-fashion family run brand that produces their clothes with real care. And... great unique designs. I’m not always huge on embroidery but its a staple of Tefkit and I think they do it well and show some character through it.
YMC Salba Short £215
One of my favourite shorts on the market at the moment making it worth the £215 price tag. I love the balloon and flowy shape to them inspired by Japanese cuts, which if you’ve been following the newsletter you’ll know i’m a big fan of. I’d personally style these with something baggy and with a similar flow to it on top.
Paratodo Shorts: £112
Another brand i’ve featured quite a bit, and a brand that is only going to get bigger so remember the name. They’ve come in with a unique approach on a cargo short with some fun colours, making for an easily wearable short with a unique approach.
Merely Made £150-170
A super nice South Korean brand making some fun shorts, they strike a balance between something you’d lounge around in all day and something that’s actually quite smart if you see what I mean. The ‘Indian Pant’ featured on the top right is probably my favourite as I like the touch of the drawstrings and I think the texture is subtle but adds a lot. You can get these straight from their website from Korea, which may come with charges or you can buy from a UK distributor such as this thing of ours, i’ll include links for both below.
