This weeks newsletter includes all sorts, from tattoo artists that i’ve had my eye on for a while and have been meaning to share for some time. To recommendations from small brands such as Sinot, Burgaud, and Apollon Store. I’ve shared some outfits that have mastered weaving different colours together in a way that feels unique but also quite simply pleasing to the eye. And plenty more, so I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter, and feel free to message me any questions or comment what you like or don’t like!
Traditional..ish Tattoos
I love traditional tattoos, the only issue I have with them is that they’re often the same thing over and over. So over the past months i’ve come across a more quirky style which still very much keeps the essence of traditional, but adds a fun aspect to it.
Yves, below is probably one of my favourite artists to do this sort of style, i’m yet to get anything by him but i’m keen to at some point.
Let me know what you guys thinks, maybe you don’t even really think it counts as traditional.. in which case that’s completely fair enough.
I don’t know if I could pull off Jasper’s style as seen below, I like to think I could but I think on the right person these would look brilliant.
Sinot- French Cotton Fisherman Smock
Sinot are a small Japanese brand with no website, so ordering takes place via Instagram DM which is about as old school as you’re going to get nowadays. Pricing is super affordable, with the smock pictured below on the left available at 13,200 yen or £66 meaning you won’t have to pay significant import fees if you’re ordering to the UK. The jacket on the right is a bit pricier at £249 but still reasonable. But yeah overall really nice pieces from a small brand that you’re not going to bump into anyone else wearing.
Burgaud Selvedge
Burgaud is a small brand out of Annecy, France that make small batch hand-made items with materials sourced either from Japan, France or Italy. They take inspiration from 1940’s -70’s workwear as well as modern skatewear making for a cross cultural blend. They’ve recently come up with some selvedge items that are priced from around £170-£280 which is very reasonable all things considered.
UTX Derby Gore-Tex Shoe
Really like these, not often you see a Gore-Tex derby and it works well. If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a while you’ll know that any sort of fusion in styles is right up my alley, so blending modern materials with an old-school silhouette definitely does it for me.
Howlin Paisley Print
I’m sure plenty of you know of Howlin already, but if you don’t they’re a brand based out of Antwerp with strong Scottish links. I came across this paisley print and I like it, if you’re looking for a statement piece then these are a great shout. Not easy to pull off, but i’ll have a go at styling them below.
I’d style the vest with the buttons undone, a white t-shirt undeath such as these by Whitesville which due to the way the seams are constructed will keep their shape despite many washes. And then the Salba short by YMC in green with some of the UTX Derby’s I mentioned above on feet. Vote in the poll below i’d be interested to see what you think of my proposed fit.
Summer Beanies- By Apollon Store
Apollon make some of my favourite beanies, and for those who like to wear beanies in summer. These will be great, as they’re made out of a lightweight linen, meaning you can protect your head without your head overheating.
How to use colour by DJ JNS
If you’re not sure how to use colour, take some inspiration from these fits. The different tones just work.. kind of like a completed jigsaw, each outfit just feels like its achieved its goal if you see what I mean.
Brands wise, DJ Jns (his instagram handle) wears a lot of SCRT, Nudie Jeans, Dickies, G.H. Bass, Neighbourhood and Aime Leon Dore. But to be honest, the main thing is the way he uses colour, not so much the brand. So if you wanted to re-create some of these outfits you certainly could just by having a look through vinted or charity shops.
The fit above is probably my favourite, the oranges and greens stand on each other so well.
Tooting Market
Probably mostly for those visiting London or that live in London, but I thought i’d include it as having been there three times this week it feels like a part of my life I should share with you all. Tooting market still feels super authentic and affordable, a rare combination nowadays. There was food from all over, Mauritius, Korean, Thai, Caribbean and so on… What stood out to me was the constant deals on offer, we got 4 cocktails for £20 which is practically unheard on in London nowadays, and they were strong! There’s plenty of offers on food, such as free starters with your main or bottomless ribs. So defo worth checking out if you’re in South London!
